COURSE SYLLABUS


Digital imaging technologies have profoundly transformed our understanding of photography and its nature as both a commercial and fine art. This class will explore the tools and methods that underlie these changes. You can expect to gain a deeper understanding about how your digital camera functions. Applications that will be covered in this course include Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, and Adobe Camera RAW.

To facilitate students’ abilities to recognize discuss and make interesting thoughtful and technically proficient photographs this class will explore ideas about the nature and process of digital photographic practice. In this class students will develop an understanding of some of the standard photographic equipment and tools available to photographers today.

By the end of the seminar students will have both a working knowledge of digital photographic image production and post production and a deepened understanding of how photographic images relate to how we think about and make pictures of the world around us.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students enrolled in this course should already feel comfortable and confident operating their Digital SLR cameras and basics of digital image production. By the end of this course students will have gained the tools necessary to work with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, and Adobe Camera RAW and engage in post-production and preparation for print and online output of their images.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Students who complete this course successfully will be proficient at an intermediate level in digital photography and will feel confident with the basics of post production editing of digital images and conceptual aspects of image production with digital cameras. Students will be adequately prepared to enroll in upper level digital photography classes. This course will also continue to develop students’ abilities to describe, interpret, analyze, and think critically about photographic images in terms of communication and in relation to broader cultural and historical contexts. Students who complete this course will design, articulate and produce entire photographic projects from start to finish.
